Nothing else unites people today like sports do, there are by far the biggest events that gather people and in today`s hunger for square meters people that have never hosted such events are having the great occasion and purpose of building something huge, radical and functional for large crowds of supporters.
These changes involve huge urban problems, traffic overload being one of the most important. As Qatar will host the World Cup in 2022 they also have a radical and quite functional plan, one that would float above other and will float literally.
Considering that they`re planning to create several floating hotels that would host around 25,000 people along with utilities and services and most important ,they`re own transportation system on water, the questions and criticism are as huge as the plan.
This would supposedly be realized by Sigge Architects that would collaborate with the Global Accommodation Management. The hotels are thought at this point to float offshore from Doha, will be linked by boats and new realized transit lines that will be built; the artificial island will also have it`s own power supply.
We do have high hopes for this project and Qatar surely has the necessary resources to accomplish such a project, we already have a Stadium Designed by Zaha Hadid as a proof.
The design and ideas are amazing, the contemporary luxurious interior design proposal will surely amaze the temporary guests, the problem rises once the event is over, floating buildings are a huge act for something temporary, an inefficient one.
If the urban planners have a future in mind for it or it will slowly rust abandoned remains to be seen.
