Acrylic or Plexiglas has become en efficient material used in furniture design and its transparency is its biggest quality. Although it is rather simple  designers offer a wide variety f shades colors and textures to personalize the pieces and make them one of a kind. The Plexiglas furniture can blend beautifully in any interior design from edgy modern ones to classic or eclectic decors, or become centerpieces, statement objects that define your entire design. Launched in 2007, the AVF (Alexandra von Furstenberg) furniture and accessories company offers a variety of acrylic furniture designs including Plexiglas chairs, desks, dinning tables and decorative items. Her shapes are mostly geometric, meant to fit in any interior design , modern or traditional.

The Plexiglas is used in a wide variety of colors, from smokey grey to candy pink. Light plays an important part as well, enhancing the objects qualities and aspect, putting it literally in the spotlight. Their functionality varies from classic coffee tables, to holders for books which can thus seem to float etc. The possibilities are endless and Alexandra von Furstenberg experiments with her Acrylic Furniture Design.

” A synthesis of art, home furnishings and fashion, the collection consists of signed, limited edition pieces made out of acrylic – a nod to the 1970s when acrylic was widely regarded as the material of the future.

Beginning with a sleek 8-piece collection ranging from side tables to an oversized dining table, the designs were named in honor of their inspiration – diamonds (i.e. “Brilliant,” “Trillion”). The gem-like collection is illuminated with neon colors.

Alexandra’s second collection “Voltage,” debuting in March 2009, is made of mirror and smoke-colored acrylic. The 9-piece collection (in addition to an expanded range of accessories) is sultry, bold, and strong. For Alexandra, choosing a darker, smokier palette for her sophomore collection was a natural evolution from the bright, pop aesthetic she embraced in 2008.

Alexandra’s collection is available at her eponymous showroom at 9001 Melrose Avenue, West Hollywood, CA 90069.”
