Best Inverter Generators

  1. Honda Super Quiet Gasoline Portable Generator with Inverter

If you are looking for a powerful portable generator, the Honda is an excellent choice. The company has recently upgraded its old model to this new version, and this one promises reliability and outstanding performance. From taking care of your cellphones to charging big electronics, the Honda is your go-to option.

Why did we like it?

A far cry from the previous model, this one is packed with a lot of power, approximately 3000 watts of starting output and 1800 watts running output.

It is equipped with multiple power outlets which can be used to connect your fridge or washing machine to smartphones and laptops. Thus if you are planning a road trip or a hike, where you would want to charge a mini-fridge as well as phones and camera batteries, this 144-pound inverter will meet all your needs.

The product also works efficiently when it comes to fuel consumption and continues to work at an optimum speed, depending on what it is being used for.

Most inverters are very noisy, and it may feel disturbing to the ears, but this one has a sound range of 48 to 57 decibels, thus making it a tranquil machine. You can put your phone to charge while you take a nap without being disturbed by the constant sound.

What could have been better?

The inverter will last you for years, but it comes with a higher price tag. Thus you will have to shell out more for the benefits. Also, we felt a fuel gauge is essential so we could be aware of the level of fuel left in the tank before it is entirely empty.

Pros
  • Bigger and more powerful engine
  • Quieter operation
  • Eco-throttle system ensuring efficient fuel consumption
Cons
  • No fuel gauge
  • Expensive
  1. Champion Power Equipment 75537I Inverter Generator

Looking for a massive machine that will even run an air conditioner? With a tank capacity of 6 liters, this is your choice to make. If you want a reliable backup for your home or if you are organizing a party and cannot afford to take the risk of power cuts, this will provide the required emergency back up!

No products found.

Why did we like it?

This is a very powerful inverter with 3100 starting watts and 2800 running watts. It could provide power for 8 hours on a single tank of gas at 25% load. This kind of power is rare with smaller inverters. The inverter also comes with wheels and handles to make it easily movable.

The sound it emanates during operations is 58 decibels, which is pretty quiet and would not be much of a hindrance. We were impressed by the versatility of this inverter, considering it could charge an air conditioner as well as a cellphone, two devices at two ends of the power continuum.

Another essential feature is the eco mode, which enabled us to automatically idle the machine, thus saving fuel in the process. Today, when there is a shortage of fuel, a feature like this is essential, and we were delighted to have it in the machine.

What could have been better?

The one thing we thought was missing from this inverter is a 240 V power outlet. This reduces the performance of ovens or fridges; a 120 V outlet will only have the appliances working at 1/4th the heat. Also, the machine is pretty heavy, and though it has wheels attached, it is difficult to move the device around.

Pros
  • Easy to use with a push to start electric button
  • Wireless remote which works from 80 meters away
  • Presence of an economy mode
Cons
  • Does not have a 240 V outlet
  • Heavy machine
  1. Westinghouse IGEN2500 Portable Inverter Generator

If you are looking for high efficiency accompanied with minimal disruption, the Westinghouse inverter is your go-to option. We were looking for a small inverter that could be carried around in times of need as well as used at home. This one, with its impeccable design, blew our minds!

No products found.

Why did we like it?

It’s only after intense amounts of scrutiny that we have decided on this product. Packed with a four-stroke powerful engine, the inverter is rated at 2500 starting watts and 2200 running watts. This is a tiny powerhouse that enabled us to keep our appliances going for 6 hours when a power cut came our way all of a sudden.

The inverter boasts of an impressive design including an LED display, asymmetrical fans, and a double insulated hood, thus making it look attractive while keeping the machine cool. We were surprised to see how the device, unlike other inverters, did not heat up even after a considerable amount of operation time.

It is a great product to take on hikes or tailgate parties because of the dual quiet mufflers, which makes it one of the quietest inverters available. The noise rated at 53 decibels promises not to sour the mood of the party or the silence of the surroundings.

What could have been better?

The generator met all our expectations except once when we had a quality control issue with the spark plug. The problem was resolved, but when we researched it, we found that this is an issue many have reported. But again, it is possible to fix it and would not be a hindrance.

Pros
  • Whisper quiet generator
  • Fuel efficient and adjustable fuel consumption
  • Fashionably designed with LED display
Cons
  • Quality control issue
  1. WEN 56125i – 1250 Watts

On a budget and looking for an inverter that will satisfy your short-time hiking or tailgate party needs yet would not burn a hole in your pocket? The WEN 56125i is your best bet! Weighing 31 lbs, this is one of the most lightweight products in the market, thus making it the most portable too.

Why did we like it?

It is one such rare generator that managed to conform to all our demands with a 60cc OHV engine, which efficiently generated 1250 running watts. With this kind of power, it could easily manage to supply small electronics and camping appliances with the required power input. We took it for a short weekend trip, and it was perfectly functional and fulfilled all our needs.

Another feature that impressed us was that this generator is EPA III and CARB certified. This means we can take it anywhere in California without the risk of facing any form of legal complications.

The noise level is 51 decibels, which is great considering the power of the inverter, and we did not feel its presence on our hike. You can ignore the sound and carry on with your party. In a nutshell, this inverter, though not as efficient as its bigger cousins, is a powerhouse in itself.

What could have been better?

The fuel tank has a capacity of 0.7 gallons, which we thought was enough for a short power cut or a short one night trip, but when it came to long trips, this generator would not be of much help. It can run for 5 hours at 50% load, which is a short period and we would have been really glad if the capacity was more.

Pros
  • Not expensive
  • EPA III and CARB-Compliant
  • Lightweight and portable
Cons
  • Does not fulfill high power demands
  1. Pulsar PG2000iSN – 2000 Watts

If you are looking for a generator that will provide you with stable power while being mobile, the Pulsar PG2000iSN is a brilliant choice to make. Being travel enthusiasts, we wanted a generator that would be able to accompany us on our expeditions, and this beast seemed perfect to take along.

Why did we like it?

With a powerful 4-stroke, single-cylinder, OHV engine, the Pulsar PG2000iSN is capable of generating 2000 starting watts and 1600 running watts, which is sufficient for 8 hours of continuous operation. This was pretty effective for us and lasted us for two days when we set up camp. This also provides enough power backup for homes in case of an emergency.

With a noise level of 59 decibels, if you can keep the inverter 100 feet away from you, the slight noise would not be bothersome. Also, the design of the product is majestic as it looks like a suitcase making it compact and easy to carry.

The inverter being lightweight accompanied by a 1.18-gallon fuel tank is everything you could ask of a small-sized inverter.

Furthermore, the PG2000iSN is parallel ready. The parallel kit guides you through building a connection promptly, and it is the easiest way to maximize the power output without compromising the weight.

What could have been better?

We faced a little trouble initially because this machine takes a short time to break into and would not be functioning in the best possible way as soon as you unbox it. But it caught up fast, and then our inverter did not stumble to date.

Pros
  • Power-efficient
  • Designed like a compact suitcase
  • Lightweight and portable
Cons
  • Takes time to break-in
  1. Champion 73536i – 2000 Watts

Planning the next outdoor gathering and dreaming of watching movies under the stars? The Champion 73536i generator can make your wish come true. It will keep your cell phones charged, microwave working to heat those delicious dishes, and the television running. What more could you possibly ask for?

Why did we like it?

It is designed to make a mark with its yellow and black colors, which makes it stand out in a crowd while the handles make it easy to carry around. This makes it very convenient in terms of portability and effectiveness.

Also, with just 1 gallon of fuel, this generator can run for 9.5 hours at a 25% load again, making it a very competent choice to settle for.

It comes with a smart economy mode and low oil shutoff, which is adding on to the benefits associated with this model. Champion has never disappointed its consumers, and this model is just an extension of their remarkable and economical products.

It is also EPA and CARB certified, which is helpful if you have to take it out to restricted neighborhoods. All in all, it is a powerful beast that is easy to set up and comes with a guide.

What could have been better?

We were delighted with the product, and the only problem we faced was when we had to clean the spark arrestor. It was difficult to remove, but once you get the hang of it and master the technique, you will not have any complaints with this product.

Pros
  • Parallel ready
  • Compact design with handles
  • Very quiet
Cons
  • Spark arrestor difficult to remove
  1. Yamaha EF2200IS Portable Inverter

Are you on the lookout for a powerful machine that can be used outdoors, even on a hot summer day? This machine comes with an air-cooled Yamaha MZ80 engine, which makes it a great choice for areas where it’s hot and humid, or in the summer season.

  • Powerful Yamaha 79cc Engine - Provides high power output.
  • Yamaha Quiet Technology - Outfitted with Yamaha...
  • Standard RV Outlet - No more searching for the right...
  • Illuminated Multi-Function LED Display - See generator...

Why did we like it?

This is one of the most manageable devices to carry with a tri-handle design, which enables two people to hold it at once. We have been sharing the load of carrying it since we bought this inverter.

It is easy to monitor the generator because this one comes with an LED display wherein you can watch and modify the functioning whenever needed. It is also environment-friendly and has a fuel economy mode, which helps it provide clean, safe, and stable power. It also enables the charging of delicate devices like cell phones and laptops.

We were also pleased with the easy carburetor drain switch, which makes draining fuel from the machine a simple task. Also, it provides easy access to its rear panel to adjust the functioning and performance. The manufacturers have honestly put in a lot of thought into the little details, and these make a massive difference in the consumers’ hands.

What could have been better?

The one problem we found with this device is that the sound level is pretty high, and keeping in mind the fact that it is expensive, we had not expected this. With the noise being 65 decibels at full load, it may seem like an irritant.

Pros
  • New tri-handle design
  • LED display to track the status of the generator
  • Presence of a carburetor drain switch
Cons
  • Noisy
  1. BRIGGS & STRATTON P4500 Powersmart Series Inverter Generator

We enjoy the silence in our homes, and if you are like us, this generator will be the best choice. Briggs and Stratton are known to be technologically a step ahead at all times with their products, and this one isn’t an exception. We were very glad about the efficiency that this machine showed and the power that it carried.

Why did we like it?

The one thing we loved about this product is the CO guard technology, which automatically turns the whole inverter down if it senses unsafe carbon monoxide levels. This reduces safety hazards and risks to life, and it made us feel a whole lot safer knowing the machine can handle itself and does not need to be continuously supervised.

Another important feature here is the LED display, which lets you see how much fuel is left in the inverter, remaining run time and how much power is being used, keeping you informed about the basics. So you can be prepared to add fuel whenever it is on the verge of finishing.

Coming to the convenience bit, this inverter came with four household outlets, 2 USB ports, and a 30 amp RV outlet, thus providing us with several different forms of charging points needed for various devices.

What could have been better?

Though it is one of the most powerful inverters in the market, Briggs and Stratton provided with a very cheap plastic exterior, which is not expected. Also, the placement of the fuel entry point is not proper, making it somewhat challenging to reach it and fill the tank.

Pros
  • CO guard technology
  • Presence of multiple power outlets
  • 16 hours of power at 25% load
Cons
  • Complex fuel entry point
  1. Briggs & Stratton 30651 P2200 – 2200 Watts

If reliability and efficiency are high up your priority list, then the Briggs & Stratton 30651 P2200 model may be exactly what you are seeking. This generator is ideal for those who are buying an inverter for the first time, as it is effortless to set up. We had it working smoothly in a matter of minutes.

Why did we like it?

With a 111cc Briggs & Stratton OHV, this brand is one you can rely on entirely. The engine is programmed with a starting wattage of 2200W and continues with 1700W allowing you to charge most devices. It will take care of appliances in your household as well as camping equipment and even sensing devices.

Another notable feature is its tank capacity of 1 gallon which allows the machine to work till 8 hours at 25% load. Coupled with secure parallel capability, this device is a very resourceful addition to your house or a camping expedition.

An additional feature is the handle that comes attached to the body, making it simpler to lift and carry. It weighs 54.6 lb, which is carryable and would not be an obstruction in case you are taking it for camping.

We cannot fail to notice the reliability that this generator offers us, and we are happy we had chosen this particular model over many options.

What could have been better?

The one problem with many of the generators that we have listed is the noise level, and with this one too, the same problem occurs. At 1/4th the load, the machine generates 59 decibels, which is not very loud but louder in comparison with many other generators in the market.

Pros
  • Easy to use and convenient
  • Lightweight and takes up less space
  • For both indoor and outdoor use
Cons
  • Makes a lot of sound
  1. Champion 100263 – 3400 Watts

One of the most advanced generators in the market, the Champion 100263, is powered by a dual fuel generator wherein you have the option to choose between using gas or propane. This feature is not common among generators and thus acts as a unique selling point for the 100263 models.

Why did we like it?

The company knows what the consumer wants, and thus this one is designed to be ultra-quiet, unlike the previous few models we wrote about. Also, the product comes with wheels and handles, so even though it weighs 99 lbs, it can be easily dragged around.

This beast is equipped with a vigorous 192 cc 4-stroke, single-cylinder engine that is truly phenomenal. The Champion dual fuel inverter generates 3400 starting watts and 3100 running watts, which is something to notice.

The runtime is pretty high, too, including 7.5 hours if gasoline is used and 14.5 hours if propane is used at 25% load. We stuck to propane as it permitted more productivity and allowed us to use the inverter for longer.

The quick touch panel allowed us to quickly understand the fuel level as well as control every other functioning of the generator.

This made it a cakewalk for us to operate the machine.

What could have been better?

An inverter that comes with so many features is bound to be bulky, and it is. Though the presence of wheels and a handle make it easy to move, also, the battery, even if not used for a long time, needs to be charged often, otherwise, it may lag. Other than these, there are no complaints with this generator.

Pros
  • Quick Touch Panel
  • Touch Start
  • Parallel Ready
  • Convenient Electric Start with 3-Position Ignition Switch
Cons
  • Very bulky
  • The battery needs to be charged at intervals
  1. WEN GN400i 4000-Watt Open Frame Inverter Generator

Looking for a 4000-watt generator that can give you the most number of benefits within your budget? We chose the Wen GN400i because it provides everything that you expect of a 4000-watt generator but is 50% quieter and 30% lighter, and we are certainly recommending this model.

WEN GN400i RV-Ready 4000-Watt Open Frame Inverter Generator,...
  • Dimensions: 19.8" L x 13.8" W x 18.9" H | Weight: 66.1 lb

  • 212cc 4-stroke CARB-compliant OHV engine produces 4000 surge...

Why did we like it?

Remember those glorious days when power was clean and safe? In today’s day and age, this goal seems complicated to achieve, but the WEN GN400i provides clean energy, devoid of voltage spikes and drops. This makes it a perfect choice for your smaller delicate gadgets like the cellphone, laptops, tablets, and monitors.

The sound emitted by the generator is half of what a standard generator emits, which makes the product exceptional in its category. The fully-stacked panel consists of a two three-prong 120V NEMA 5-20R receptacles, two 5V USB ports, and one 120V transfer-switch-ready NEMA L5-30R twist-lock receptacle thus allowing you to connect multiple types of devices at once.

The inverter is also environment-friendly as it has the eco-mode switch, which prevents any wastage of fuel and helps regulate the use of power according to the appliance that is connected. The two-year warranty that is provided by the company makes it a very safe bet.

What could have been better?

We thought the instruction guide could be made in a better way, so the process of installation is easier. The manual was complicated and challenging to understand. Adding to this, the wheels which are attached are tiny and not sturdy, making it difficult to roll the machine on rough terrains.

Pros
  • Relatively quieter
  • Powerful fuel-efficient engine
  • Presence of fuel shutoff switch
Cons
  • Ambiguous instruction manual
  1. Westinghouse iGen4200 – 4200 Watts

If you are living in a place where power cuts are very frequent due to adverse weather conditions, you need to be prepared for the worst kind of hurricanes and torrential rain. We have relatives staying in Florida who have the same opinion and have bought this device a few months back.

  • Powered by a 212cc Westinghouse 4-Stroke OHV Engine for Up...
  • Plug-and-Play: Comes With Oil, an Oil Funnel, a Tool Kit,...

Why did we like this?

The first thing that we loved when the product arrived at our doorstep was the fact that unlike most of the inverters, it was already set up. The only thing we needed to do was fuel it up and press the ‘on’ switch.

The remote start makes it simpler to turn on, and you do not have to pull the recoil. Added to this, the inverter could power a fridge, TV, lights, and fans, thus making it possible to live through a power cut comfortably.

With a capacity of running for 18 hours on a full tank of fuel at a stretch, it sure is one powerful machine. The gas tank is large and can hold 2.6 gallons of oil at one time. We didn’t need to fill it up after every power cut because of the massive volume of the tank.

What could have been better?

The one issue with this otherwise perfect device is that it does not come with wheels. Now, the point is, this is a big machine, and without wheels, pulling it around would be very difficult. We did not want to break our backs, and thus we bought the wheels separately, but it increases the total expenditure a lot.

Pros
  • Works out of the box
  • Multiple charging points
  • Extremely powerful
  • Efficient remote start
Cons
  • No wheels are provided
  1. WEN 56200i 2000 Watt Inverter Generator

Heading out camping and looking for a generator that will not wake up others while it is at work? Look no more because we found a gem for you. At only 51 decibels when working at a 25% load, it is guaranteed to let the kids sleep peacefully as it powers up your appliances.

WEN 56200i 2000-Watt Gas Powered Portable Inverter...
  • Dimensions: 18" x 11" x 18" | Weight: 48 lbs
  • Noise Level: 53 dB operation
  • EPA III and CARB Compliant 79.7 cc 4-stroke OHV engine...
  • Great for campgrounds, construction sites, tailgates and...

Why did we like it?

We took a trip on an RV with kids, and this is the generator we opted for. Weighing only 48 pounds, it was child’s play to get it up on the RV, and its runtime is impressive too. It can run at 100% output for 4 hours and 50% output for 6 hours, which will be enough for a short trip.

The US Department of Health and Human Services has proclaimed that the noise emitted by this device is at par with the noise level of a conversation between two people, which is the best we could afford presently, especially with two young kids.

Adding to it, since the machine is EPA III and CARB certified, we could take it with us on the RV even to restricted areas. Also, the low fuel alert installed in the inverter is a boon for those of us who do not always want to keep checking the fuel level.

What could have been better?

We would have been happier if the wattage was higher as devices in this range mostly have a greater output capacity. Here it will only run for 4 hours at maximum load, which is easily exhaustible. The shorter output period makes it difficult for us to run gadgets that need a lot of power.

Pros
  • Safely charges delicate devices
  • Eco-friendly
  • Quiet and does not cause disturbance
  • Easy to handle
  • Portable and lightweight
Cons
  • Output period not long enough
  1. Champion 3100-Watt RV Ready Generator

If it is a backup generator you are looking for, the Champion 3100 watt model is an excellent choice. Small in size and easily carryable, this generator is a must-have to prevent an emergency situation crisis. It is a budget-friendly option to go with and does its job flawlessly.

CHAMPION POWER EQUIPMENT 3100-Watt RV Ready Portable...
  • Quick Touch Panel – Access all your controls in one spot,...
  • Ultra-Quiet Operation – 58 dBA is perfect for RVs,...
  • Clean Power for Sensitive Electronics – RV Ready with a...
  • Smart Economy Mode – Can reduce the electrical load,...

Why did we like it?

We had the device working for 8 hours at 25% load, and it worked fine! Compared to the previous method, this gave a longer run-time, and paired with low noise levels, this serves all our purposes. It also has a very user-friendly display that operates via touch and will enable you to monitor everything the generator does through this.

This generator is equipped with wheels and a handle, and we were delighted with the wheels as smaller generators tend not to come with them. Even our kids could move the inverter from place to place with this added advantage.

The company offers lifetime technical support for the device, which is of great help in case of malfunctions. It also gives three years limited warranty which allows us to live peacefully, knowing we are in safe hands.

What could have been better?

The one disadvantage we noticed was the absence of a remote-start facility. Everytime we had to switch on the gadget, we had to operate it manually which seemed like a hindrance in a world of remote controlled inverters. Other than this, we were satisfied with the generator.

Pros
  • 8 hours of run time
  • Low oil shut off and recoil start
  • Cast iron body for durability
Cons
  • No remote start facility

Best Inverter Generator Buyer’s Guide

You now know the different kinds of inverters available in the market, but again, you may face some confusion, mainly because there are some which almost offer the same features. We will further list down the specifics one should keep in mind before deciding on one product.

The Noise Level

Decide between a silent machine and a machine which will make considerable noise. Previously inverters always made a lot of sounds, but that was beneficial in a way that if the inverter ran out of fuel, the noise would stop, and it was a clear indicator that one needs to refill it.

With noiseless machines or machines which make very little noise, it would not cause a disturbance, but you would have to keep a check on the fuel level.

Size and Portability

Make a clear note of what you want to use the inverter for. If you are going to travel a lot, it has to be compact, but to achieve a higher wattage and for household needs, go for bigger ones. Again, see if the device has wheels. If you are incapable of lifting heavy weights, make sure the inverter has wheels attached.

Doubling up

Though many do not know about this feature, it is crucial when it comes to traveling for more extended periods. If you opt for a generator that works in parallel, you can double up the power output by connecting two generators.

This is very beneficial, and the process of connection is also simple. But this would come at a higher cost than inverters, which do not have the means to make this happen. So decide wisely if you need this added feature.

Pollution

A generator is mainly a gasoline engine, and it is not meant to be kept indoors. But today there are specific inverter generators which are CARB certified, which makes it safer for your use as well as the environment.

If you are living in an area where there are air quality issues, make sure to opt for one which is CARB certified. Planning to travel a lot and to take your inverter along? You should again choose an environment-friendly one.

Price

While buying an inverter, it is not only about the selling price that you need to keep in mind but also the maintenance costs, operational life, and the cost of fuel. An inverter may be expensive but may come with comparatively lower maintenance costs and vice-versa. Thus pay attention to the specifications of the model you are thinking of buying.

Output

The final point to keep in mind is the output. So the output is measured in watts, and your needs would define how much wattage is needed. Massive generators could be 12000 watts, which would light up your entire home and maybe a whole party too while a 2000 wattage one is enough if you need it for a personal hike or family trip.

Decide your usage and then make a decision because the higher the wattage, the bigger the machine we are looking at.

Verdict

This is again a tough choice to make as all the options listed above have their set of advantages. We would still choose the WEN 56200i 2000 Watt Inverter for its lightweight and low sound quality for RV trips.

This device works very well with charging small household appliances and delicate devices, but the runtime is low and thus would not be a feasible option to use as a backup option for our home.

For this, we would go with the Westinghouse iGen4200 – 4200 Watts as a backup device in case of power cuts. This inverter has a brilliant capacity and would last for 12 hours if need be.

You now know everything you possibly could about inverter generators. It’s time to hit the stores and buy your own. Happy shopping!
