How many times have you passed by an object and remarked something unusual, like it smiled or laughed at you? We all know that these things are just in our imagination and that the nature around us, sadly, cannot come to life; or can it?
These days we came across a Brazilian artist known just for that: he is recognized for his paintings on surfaces that would not smile at you usually, irregular surfaces that can variate from ruined walls to huge rocks. He is entitled Andre Muniz Gonzaga, he is a living proof that the human being is able to make others intrigued, amused and interested in an area in which usually they would not set foot.
Even though he has pieces of art materialized on canvas too, he is well known for his street art which stands out from the rest, for a multitude of reasons. First of all, we are not used to smiling rocks or walls that watch us, therefore they are much more original then the ones on canvas. Second of all, they have a huge quality: they blend in the environment making the art seem natural there, the art does not disturb us but surprises us with a face of its own, literally. Third of all, his work is remarkable because it`s found in poverty stricken areas and down urban zones; he works with things that are there already, preexisting shapes and contours creating so a huge contrast effect for the paintings.
Given the fact that Andre Muniz Gonzaga expresses himself by giving us a smile instead of a disgusted face in a down urban area, we can consider him a social oriented artist, not just a street artist. His imagination knows no limit from what we see, fact that encourages us even more to promote his work further on and help him as much as possible. He is like a make up artist for the ugly parts of the world.
