Ferrari World is a magnificent, out of the ordinary piece of design that symbolizes the performance achievements of the company and its appeal. There are many attractions among which you can find the fastest roller coaster in the world, Formula Rossa. The park is sheltered by a 200,000 square meter roof, making it the largest indoor amusement park.
In 2005 Ferrari and Aldar Properties signed an agreement to build the world’s first Ferrari theme park. The construction started in 2008 and was finished in November 2010. It is located in Abu Dhabi, on Yas Island (Amazing Construction Built Over F1 Racing Track-Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi Hotel by Asymptote Architecture). The roof of course is the thing that catches when you first see the building. It was designed by Benoy Architects and inspired by the side profile of a Ferrari GT. The engineering behind the iconic roof was realized by Ramboll, who also provided the structural and facade engineering, the master planning and urban design. The Ferrari logo that decorates the roof measures 65m by 48,5m making it visible for many miles. This out of the ordinary design is however part of a bigger project that involves the entire Yas island, which is to become a global tourist destination. Inside the theme park you can find 20 different attractions, most of them being designed by Jack Rouse Associates. There are carousel’s, a theater featuring the 1920s period, the world’s largest Ferrari gallery, a racing school, a driving school for children, a recreation of an aerial trip over Italy and many, many others. This out of the ordinary design is however part of a bigger project that involves the entire Yas island, which is to become a global tourist destination.
Here are some details from the architects:
“Externally the Ferrari World Abu Dhabi building expresses the language and values of the Ferrari brand itself. Benoy’s vision – to create a building that reflects Ferrari’s sinuous form, is directly inspired by the classic double curve side profile of the Ferrari GT chassis. The double curve was proportionately applied in elevation to set the structure’s length and height. This proportion gave rise to the dynamic scale of the building at 700 metres from tip to tip of the tri-forms.”
All in all, the Ferrari World themed park proves itself to be not just the ideal destination for all Ferrari fans, but also an astonishing piece of architecture and engineering.
