The project is called The Lake House and it features a very simple but very elegant luxurious black and white interior design where marble, raw concrete, timber and steel are combined to achieve a modern and minimalist composition.
Igor Sirotov is a Ukrainian architect and interior designer who uses simplicity to create environments that fit perfectly in the contemporary style. Our lives have become so complicated and crowded by daily activities that sometimes a simple home design proves to be the most satisfying and beautiful. The modern black and white design that this article features is, despite of its achromatic touch, a very elaborately conceived studio that gets its beauty from the natural textures of each material and the way they were combined.
Concrete is the dominating element and plays a very important part in the black and white design. Normally, it cannot enhance the aesthetics of a project but if it’s casted properly, in a precise way that ensures no need for further finishing, it can become a great contributor to the beauty of a home, especially if it’s combined with the right materials. Placing it near a very warm, brown wood texture wouldn’t be as effective and it would probably look quite ugly but that’s not the case here. In this studio the concrete stands somewhere in the middle of the color range and acts more like a background for the rest of the composition. In fact, you could say that because of its neutrality it accentuates the attributes of the black and white materials, making them stand out.
The rule in this black and white design is to always place two different colors together to create contrast and help them emphasize each other. This makes the composition vibrate become very dynamic, despite the limited color range. However, this pulse of black and white is not obvious or disturbing at all; it is in fact quite sublime and elegant and you don’t notice it at first, but only when you observe the details. The most beautiful and important element is the bathroom wall which has been covered with an exquisite type of marble, the only “complicated” part of the design but, at the same time, the thing that makes it catch your eye. The designer’s choice of covering that specific part of the studio with it was very wise because you can see it from any part of the house and because it’s unique but also very interestingly textured it becomes a very strong and powerful part of the design, to which everything else is focused and concentrated. But just like the rest of the black and white design, it’s sort of hidden and elusive; you don’t notice immediately that it’s there but it affects you perception of the room, increasing its quality.
Homesthetics conclusion:
The general feel of the black and white interior design is very cozy and intimate, despite the monochromatic palette of colors. I believe it’s very elegant and appropriate for projects ranging from a summer cottage to a bachelor pad. It would fit anywhere and, probably the most important aspect, it will never be out of fashion; black and white are always going to define a contemporary modern style.
