Wearing a highly suggestive name, Cliff House, is a project completed recently by MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects which extends far over the rocky edge of the cliff in Nova Scotia(Canada) on the Atlantic`s coastline. Cliff House was designed for one simple purpose, to serve as a simple peaceful retreat that offers extraordinary views. The home is actually a huge two-story cantilever using steel-frames and wood to materialize itself, becoming a weekend getaway for a family that shuttles between California and Nova Scotia, the perfect way to break a monotone lifestyle.
The best thing about this small weekend retreat is that it does not require a huge investments, being built with a extremely low budget as a response to the austere challenging climate;the architects are further relating:
“This is a modest, affordable cabin that is intended as a repeatable prototype. A large, galvanized, steel superstructure anchors it to the cliff. A light steel endoskeleton forms the primary structure expressed on the interior. The envelope is a simple flat form framed box, which is clad in cedar shiplap.”
Everything focuses on one thing, the landscape; with an open plan living room exposed on three sides through windows and a small mezzanine bedroom the whole house obtains extraordinary expansive views, simplicity being the best tool to emphasize the surroundings and creating a peaceful ambiance to be enjoyed.
